In what's being called a landmark decision for the cryptocurrency and libertarian communities, President Trump has granted a full and unconditional pardon to Ross Ulbricht, the founder of the notorious dark web marketplace Silk Road. The New York Post reports that Trump made the announcement Tuesday night on Truth Social, specifically highlighting the support he received from the Libertarian Movement in making this decision. Ulbricht, who had been serving two life sentences plus 40 years in a maximum-security prison in Arizona, was convicted in 2015 on charges including drug trafficking, money laundering, and computer hacking. The case gained widespread attention as one of the first major prosecutions involving cryptocurrency, with Silk Road becoming infamous for accepting Bitcoin as payment.

Senator Rand Paul of Kentucky played a crucial role in pushing for this pardon, sending a direct letter to Trump arguing that Ulbricht's sentence was, quote, "vastly disproportionate to his crimes." Paul pointed out that even the worst drug sellers on the site received significantly more lenient sentences than Ulbricht's life term. In his characteristic style, Trump didn't mince words about the prosecution, calling the officials who worked to convict Ulbricht "scum" and linking them to what he describes as the modern-day weaponization of government against himself. According to Ulbricht's lawyer Brandon Sample, the now 40-year-old and his family are "deeply and eternally grateful" for this act of clemency after enduring over a decade of incarceration.

The pardon fulfills a campaign promise Trump made last May at the Libertarian National Convention, where supporters held "Free Ross" signs during his speech. This decision marks a significant moment in the ongoing debate about criminal justice reform and the intersection of technology, privacy, and law enforcement in the digital age.
